Facts About Bullying

According to the FCPS Students Rights and Responsibility manual, Bullying is defined as physical and psychological harassment on the part of one or more students towards another. In addition, an act may be considered Bullying when a person or a group of people repeatedly use words or actions to intentionally cause physical or emotional harm to another person.

Characteristics of Bullying

• The behavior may be aggressive, malicious, threatening or seriously intimidating.

• Bullying behavior is repeated and goes on over time.

• It occurs in an interpersonal relationship which is characterized by a certain imbalance in power.

Types of Bullying

• Physical - Hitting, pushing, bumping or other unwanted physical aggression.

• Verbal - Teasing, name-calling, put-downs or harmful gossip that is hurtful in nature.

• Relational - Intimidation, humiliation, exclusion or social isolation.

• Cyber - Using electronic devices such as, but not limited to, computers and cell phones to bully others. This includes postings to social networks, text messages, and e-mails.

Reporting Bullying at SCMS

We encourage all students and parents/guardians to report all types of bullying to an adult at SCMS, such as a teacher, a counselor, or an administrator. We strive to work together to create a culture of acceptance and a safe learning environment for all at South County Middle School.
