Eighth grade students will participate in a Day of Service on Wednesday, Jun 7, 2023.  Our purpose is to encourage students to become productive, ethical citizens of a global community by providing opportunities to give back to our community and the worldStudents will have the opportunity to participate in four different activities that range in focus from assisting individuals, helping the Lorton community, and impacting the world at large.

One activity students will participate in is a food packaging event with Rise Against Hunger.

We must raise $13,800 for the Rise Against Hunger event.  This money will allow us to buy the food and materials needed to package 34,992 meals.  Students are encouraged to share this DONATION PAGE with family and friends.

FUNDRAISING INFORMATION

  • DO Share link with family and friends
  • DO Encourage parents to share the link with their work (always searching for business / corporate sponsors and donations)
  • DO NOT go door to door in your neighborhood asking for donations
  • DO NOT collect cash, ask people to pay via the website.

A second activity the students will participate in is the maintenance and construction of a new part of the SCMS garden.  Students last year planted a native pollinator garden that we will clean up and beautify.  Students will also take part in the construction of our new raised garden beds.  We will be filling the beds with soil and planting various edible crops and herbs for use in the FACS kitchen in the fall.  In the event of a bumper crop, SCMS will donate the additional produce to the LCAC.  Please contact South County Middle School (703 690 5500) if you are able to donate soil.

The third activity the students will participate in is preparing Toiletry Care Packages. Providing essential care kits is a way to help provide immediate assistance to strangers experiencing homelessness you encounter in your day-to-day life. It also helps to foster a sense of community connection and help to build bridges between different members of the community creating opportunities for deeper connection and conversation. Students will also help writing personalized notes with the care packages. Students can bring items to school and drop them off in the collection bin near the main office.  Items may be mailed to:
